Online English TutorRepeated score

IELTS Writing is 6.5 again. Before you book anything, compare two pieces of your writing.

A repeated score tells me there is still a limit somewhere. It does not tell me whether the problem is task response, development, organisation, vocabulary, grammar, or what happens when the clock starts to bite.

The useful answer first

Do not treat 6.5 as a diagnosis. Put two timed scripts side by side, mark only what repeats, change one thing, then use a fresh task to see whether the change survives without help.

Fix one real problem with me

Do not accept advice until you can see what changes in the response.

This is a QuickTalk Tutor practice example, not official test material and not a promised score. The criterion claim is checked against the official sources listed later in this article.

WHAT I WROTE OR TRIED
Some people believe that university students should study other subjects. I agree because it gives them more knowledge and is very beneficial.
WHY IT LOST MARKS OR CLARITY

The position is visible, but the reason stops at “more knowledge”. The reader cannot see what knowledge, why it matters, or how it answers this exact question. Repeating beneficial does not develop the idea.

A STRONGER VERSION
I agree that students should take one supporting subject because it can supply a skill their main degree may not teach. For example, an engineering student who studies communication may explain technical decisions more clearly to clients.

The meaning remains the learner’s. The job of the correction is to make that meaning clearer and more effective. One sentence alone cannot guarantee an OET grade.

NOW YOU TRY

Keep your opinion. Add one reason, one specific example and the consequence. Then test the same structure on a fresh Task 2 question.

This is what the Diagnostic is for.

If you can see the mistake but cannot identify what keeps causing it in your own work, the Diagnostic checks your exact route, skill, current criteria and target.

The score is useful. The story you attach to it may be wrong.

If you show me a 6.5, I am not going to look at the number and say “your vocabulary is the problem”. That would be guessing. IELTS Writing is judged across four criteria, and Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1. The final number is the result of the whole performance, not a neat label telling us what to teach next.

So I start with the work. I want two recent responses written under realistic time pressure. One essay can have an unusual mistake. Two essays start to show me what follows you from task to task.

If the same weakness appears twice, I have something to investigate. If it disappears on the next task, I do not build a whole lesson around it.

What I am looking forNot a generic mistake list. I want the evidence that repeats when the task, question or pressure changes.
Work through one with me

Do not just read the criteria. Use them on an answer.

This practice question and response were written by QuickTalk Tutor. They are not official IELTS test material and I am not assigning an official band score here. The point is to show you how the four official Writing criteria change what you look for.

Practice Task 2 question

Some people think university students should be required to study at least one subject outside their main field. Others think students should focus only on the subject they chose. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

A complete practice response

University students usually enter higher education to develop specialist knowledge, so it is understandable that some people want them to concentrate only on their chosen subject. However, I believe one carefully selected subject outside the main field can be useful, provided that it supports rather than distracts from the degree.

There are strong reasons for protecting time for the main subject. Degree programmes can already include demanding lectures, projects, laboratories and independent study. An engineering student, for example, may need many hours each week to understand technical concepts and complete practical work. If several unrelated subjects are added, the student may have less time to master the knowledge that the degree is supposed to provide. This matters especially in courses linked to professional standards.

On the other hand, one relevant subject outside the main field can make a graduate more effective. Technical knowledge is not always enough in real work. An engineer who studies communication may explain a design more clearly to a client, while a business student who takes an introductory data course may make better decisions from evidence. In both cases, the extra subject adds a skill that strengthens the student's main area rather than replacing it.

For these reasons, universities should keep the main degree as the priority but allow, and in some cases require, one carefully chosen supporting subject. The aim should not be to make students study more for the sake of it. It should be to add a useful skill that they can carry into their main field and future work.

Now check it like evidence

Tap each criterion. Then compare the question with your own latest timed essay. Do not ask only, “Is my English good?” Ask what the response actually proves.

See what “stronger” means without making the language fancy
Thin idea

Studying another subject is useful because students learn more things and this can help them in the future.

Stronger development

An engineering student who studies communication may explain a technical design more clearly to a client. The value is not simply “learning more”. The extra subject adds a skill the main degree may not teach directly, and that skill supports the student's professional work.

What changed? The second version gives a specific reason, example and consequence. The improvement comes from development and precision, not from replacing simple words with complicated ones.

Official criterion lens: IELTS Writing uses Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1.

Before you decide what is wrong

Three explanations that sound convincing until you test them against your own writing.

Tap each card. Compare the assumption with the evidence you should actually look for in your own work.

Do this now

Try this before you write another twenty essays.

Tick only what you can support from your own work. The aim is not to collect problems. It is to see whether a pattern is actually repeating.

TRY IT

A 10 minute transfer test

Take one paragraph you corrected yesterday. Close the correction. Choose a new IELTS Writing question. Give yourself 10 minutes to plan and write only the opening plus one developed idea. Then ask: did the same improvement appear without the old answer beside me?

The QuickTalk Tutor method

Useful feedback should survive the next question.

This is how I would handle the evidence at QuickTalk Tutor. I keep the original response, name the strongest supported blocker, strengthen your own words, then change the task so you cannot simply copy the correction.

01

Keep the original

I need the unchanged answer or recording so we have something real to compare.

02

Name one priority

I separate the strongest supported blocker from smaller issues instead of teaching everything at once.

03

Strengthen your words

The improved response should still sound like you. I explain why the change helps.

04

Change the task

A new prompt tests whether the improvement transfers when the answer is no longer familiar.

What should you do next?

Choose the next step from what the evidence shows.

If the blocker is clear, work on it. If the cause is unclear, investigate it. If the route is unclear, verify the route before paying for teaching.

You already know the blocker
