Why PTE feels easier but scores differently.
If your PTE report looks contradictory, strong English, strange numbers, it isn’t broken. PTE scores in a way almost nobody explains properly, and that’s usually the real problem.
Who this is for
- Taking PTE for the first time. The format is unlike anything you have sat before, and knowing that in advance is most of the battle
- Already scoring well and want to lift one sub score over a threshold
- Anyone whose PTE score does not match their English level
- Candidates who did well on Vocabulary but poorly overall
- People grinding Reading practice with no improvement
- Australian and Canadian migration applicants
- Anyone who performs better on a computer than in front of an examiner
What this test is really measuring
If this is your first PTE, read this part carefully. PTE is not a harder or easier version of IELTS. It is a different machine entirely, and people who walk in expecting IELTS with a computer attached tend to be surprised by the score rather than the questions.
If you are seeing PTE oral fluency formatting drops, or what looks like a PTE computer grading system machine error scoring lapse, it is almost never an error. Computers do not listen the way people do, and a natural thinking pause of a long pause registers as dead space. That applies equally to PTE Academic UKVI registration candidates, since the test content is identical.
Two things make it different, and neither is difficult once someone explains them. Most candidates only discover them after a disappointing result, which is an expensive way to learn.
PTE reports two different things, and the difference is where most confusion lives.
Communicative skills are the four you expect: Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening.
Communicative skills are six separate measures Because tasks are integrated, one task can contribute to more than one communicative skill, which is why the cause of a lower score often sits in a task you were not expecting.
Recent changes that affect your preparation
New speaking tasks were added from August 2025, “respond to a situation” and “summarize a group discussion”, along with tighter AI detection of memorised or unoriginal responses. Courses built before that date don’t include them.
AHPRA lowered its PTE Academic requirement from 66 to 63 on 23 April 2026 for Australian healthcare registration. If you’re working to the old number, you may be aiming higher than you need to.
Which version do you need?

PTE Academic UKVI |
UK visa routes needing a SELT. Identical test, approved centre, issues a Unique Reference Number, see UKVI Test |
A standard PTE score report has no Unique Reference Number and cannot be used for a UK visa, however high the score.
Where the marks actually go
What usually goes wrong, what I look for in your work, and how we work with it.
Speaking
Machine scored on content, oral fluency and pronunciation. Feeds several other scores through integrated tasks.
What usually goes wrong
- Hesitation and self correction breaking fluency scores
- Reading aloud word by word instead of in natural phrases
- Rushing Repeat Sentence before processing the whole sentence
- Memorised openings, which the system now flags
- Speaking too quietly or too far from the microphone
How I work with it: Rhythm, chunking and pacing are mechanical and highly trainable. This is often where the fastest single score gain is available.
Writing
Assessed on content, form, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and written discourse. Word limits are strictly enforced.
What usually goes wrong
- Going over or under the word limit and losing form marks entirely
- Summarize Written Text written as two sentences instead of one
- Spelling errors, which are scored and affect Writing
- Essays that argue well but ignore the prompt’s exact task
- No clear discourse structure, which the scoring explicitly rewards
How I work with it: Form errors are the cheapest marks on the whole test to recover, because they’re rule based rather than skill based.
Reading
Partly scored through tasks that don’t look like reading tasks at all, because of integrated scoring.
What usually goes wrong
- Assuming a low Reading score means weak reading
- Spending weeks on reading practice with no movement
- Losing marks on re order paragraphs through guessing
- Fill in the blank errors driven by vocabulary, not comprehension
- Poor time allocation across the reading section
How I work with it: First I check whether your Reading score is actually a reading problem. Very often it isn’t, see below.
Listening
Also fed by speaking and writing tasks, so a low score can originate elsewhere.
What usually goes wrong
- Write From Dictation errors, which carry unusually heavy weight
- Missing the first few words while adjusting to the accent
- Highlight Incorrect Words losing marks through over selection
- Summarize Spoken Text drifting off the main idea
- Note taking that’s too slow to keep up
How I work with it: Write From Dictation is often the highest value fix on the entire test, because it feeds both Listening and Writing.
Communicative skills, the hidden layer
Six measures reported separately: Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, Written Discourse.
What usually goes wrong
- Not knowing which tasks feed which score
- Assuming a low score points to the skill it is reported under
- Assuming a low overall means weak English generally
- Treating the four main scores as four independent problems
How I work with it: This is the single most useful thing I do for PTE candidates. Read the report properly once, find which communicative skill is capping which communicative score, and target that.
Integrated scoring, in plain language
Many PTE tasks score two skills at once, which is why the numbers can look illogical.
What usually goes wrong
- Read Aloud feeds Speaking and Reading
- Repeat Sentence feeds Speaking and Listening
- Summarize Spoken Text feeds Listening and Writing
- So a low Reading score is frequently a speaking task problem
How I work with it: This explains more confusing PTE reports than anything else, and it takes ten minutes. It has saved people weeks of practising entirely the wrong section.
Integrated tasks, and why the low number can mislead you.
PTE uses integrated tasks, so a single task can contribute to more than one communicative skill. That is why the cause of a lower score is often not in the skill where the low number appears. Working out which task is actually feeding the number is the first useful step.
Because of integrated scoring, the section that looks weak often is not the cause. I start with your actual score report and work out which task type is genuinely responsible before we practise anything.
On accent: pronunciation and fluency are machine scored precisely so accent and identity cannot be judged. The system never sees who you are. What people experience as an accent penalty is nearly always rhythm, chunking or hesitation, all coachable, and none of them your accent.
When this is not the right test for you
PTE is a strong choice for many people, but not everyone.
- If you’re a nurse, midwife or doctor, PTE will not work. It isn’t accepted by the UK NMC, the UK GMC, Ireland’s NMBI, or CGFNS/VisaScreen in the US. Go to OET or IELTS Academic instead. This is the most expensive mistake on this site, and it’s entirely avoidable.
- If you need it for a UK visa, you need the UKVI version specifically. See UKVI Test.
- If speaking to a human is easier for you than a microphone, IELTS may suit you better.
When this is not the right test for you
- Your score report or writing reviewed properly, not skimmed
- The exact weakness named, criterion, skill or route
- A written report and a one page plan naming what to fix first
- Honest advice on whether to continue, retake, or switch test

No score report? You don’t need one. The Diagnostic works just as well from a goal and a deadline.
My daughter became much more confident speaking English. She now participates more in class and is much less afraid of making mistakes.
Li
China
I struggled to speak English during meetings and conversations. The lessons gave me practical speaking practice, and I now express my ideas much more clearly.
Sophie
France
I knew the grammar but struggled to speak fluently in the IELTS test. Regular speaking practice and detailed feedback helped me improve my fluency and confidence.
Ahmed
Saudi Arabia
I understood English when people spoke to me but found it difficult to reply quickly. The lessons helped me respond more naturally and speak with less hesitation when travelling.
Elena
Spain
I often gave very short answers during speaking practice. With structured practice and feedback, I learned how to develop my answers and speak for longer with more confidence.
David
Italy
I needed English for communicating with international clients. We focused on real workplace conversations, and I now feel much more comfortable speaking during meetings and calls.

PTE preparation that respects integrated scoring.
We do not teach the question. We teach you to recognise what the question requires.
The topic and wording can change on exam day. Your preparation should therefore go beyond memorising model answers or rehearsing one familiar question type. We work from the current requirements of this exam, look at how you approach the task and help you build a method you can transfer when the question changes.
Your words stay yours. Where language is the blocker, we strengthen it. Where the real problem is task understanding, timing, technique or pressure, that is what we work on.
PTE scores several skills through the same task, so a reported Reading problem may be influenced by an integrated task rather than by your reading at all. That is why the answer is rarely simply to do more reading. We look at which tasks are actually feeding the number before deciding what to work on.

Questions about PTE Academic
PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI?
Identical test content. The UKVI version is sat at an approved centre and issues a Unique Reference Number for visa use. If your goal is a UK visa you need the UKVI version, details on the UKVI page.
How is PTE scored?
Your PTE score report centres on an overall score and four communicative skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. One weak communicative skill can pull several main scores down at once, which is why reports often look contradictory.
Why is my Reading score low when my English is fine?
Because of integrated scoring. Read Aloud contributes to your Reading score, so a speaking task problem shows up as a reading number. Many people practise reading for weeks fixing something that was never broken.
Does my accent affect my score?
No. Pronunciation and fluency are scored by a system trained across many linguistic backgrounds, and it never sees who you are. What feels like accent penalty is usually rhythm, chunking or hesitation, all trainable.
Is diagnosis better than more practice?
For PTE specifically, usually yes. Practice only helps if it’s aimed at the real cause, and on this test the real cause frequently sits in a different section from the low score. One properly read report can save weeks.
I have never taken PTE. Is it easier than IELTS?
No, not by the UK NMC, the UK GMC, Ireland’s NMBI, or CGFNS and VisaScreen in the US. Some websites claim otherwise. Verify with your regulator directly before booking anything.
What should a first timer do before booking?
Not easier, different. Most people find the absence of a human examiner takes pressure off, and the speed of results helps. What catches first timers is the integrated scoring and the pace of the tasks. Knowing both before you sit it is worth more than weeks of general practice.
Do I need to be good with computers?
Confirm PTE is accepted for your specific goal, because for healthcare registration it is not. Then get a realistic read on your starting point. Both are covered in the Diagnostic and neither requires a score report.
What is a PTE score report and how is it worked out?
It shows four communicative skills, Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening, plus six communicative skills underneath: Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary and Written Discourse. The communicative skills are the part almost nobody reads, and they explain most confusing reports. On top of that, PTE uses integrated scoring, so one task can feed two skill scores at once.
What actually happens in a Diagnostic Session?
Sixty minutes, live. We go through your score report or your writing line by line. If you have no report, we do a short skills check instead, across all four skills if it is your first time, or focused on the weakest one if you have sat before. Then I name the specific thing holding your score, show you the evidence in your own work, and give you a plan. Afterwards you get a written report and a one page plan by email.
Can I pay in instalments?
Instalment options, where available, are shown at checkout. Payments are handled securely through Stripe.
What payment methods do you accept?
Payments are handled securely through Stripe. Available payment methods are shown at checkout. All processed securely by Stripe, so we never see or store your card details.
Still not sure what's holding your score back?
Start with a Diagnostic Session. If it turns out you don’t need lessons at all, I’ll tell you that.
