Which English test does your UK visa route actually accept?

This page is about route validity, not teaching. Get this decision wrong and a perfectly good score becomes worthless, which happens more often than it should.

Who this is for

  • Skilled Worker, Scale up and High Potential Individual applicants
  • Family and settlement route applicants
  • Student route applicants unsure whether their university vouches for them
  • Anyone who has already booked a test and wants to check it counts
  • Healthcare professionals confirming which test their regulator accepts

What this test is really measuring

A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is not a different exam. It’s the same exam, sat at an approved centre, producing a result the Home Office will accept.

A standard IELTS or PTE result, however high the score, is not valid for most UK visa routes. The UKVI versions carry a reference number that standard versions don’t, and that number is what your application needs.

This is also where the which approved test and version your route requires catch people out, and where most UK visa language requirement score drops actually come from.

This is a paperwork problem, not an English problem. But it costs people entire test fees and months of delay, and it is completely avoidable with five minutes of checking.

Recent changes that affect your preparation

From 8 January 2026, the English requirement for new Skilled Worker, Scale up and High Potential Individual applicants rose from B1 to B2. That’s a real step up, and a great deal of guidance still online quotes the old B1 level.

From 26 March 2027, the English requirement for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) rises from B1 to B2.

That second change affects a large group who don’t yet know it’s coming: people who’ve lived and worked in the UK for years, have never sat a formal English test, and will need one. If that’s you, there’s still time to plan properly rather than rushing it.

Which version do you need?

Standard vs UKVI, what actually differs

Your goal What works
Skilled Worker / Scale up / HPI IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI, B2 since Jan 2026
Family or settlement route IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI. Settlement rises to B2 in March 2027
Student route UKVI version, or your university may vouch for another test when issuing your CAS
University admission only (no visa) Standard IELTS, PTE or TOEFL, check the institution
UK nurse or midwife (NMC) IELTS Academic or OET only. PTE not accepted.
UK doctor (GMC) IELTS Academic or OET Medicine only. PTE not accepted.

The most expensive mistake on this site

PTE is not accepted by the UK NMC, the UK GMC, Ireland's NMBI, or CGFNS/VisaScreen in the US. Multiple websites and some agents claim otherwise. People sit it, score well, and discover months later that it cannot be used for registration.

If you work in healthcare, your accepted options are IELTS Academic or OET. Verify with your own regulator directly, not with a forum, an agent, or this page.

Last reviewed July 2026. Visa and regulatory rules change; always confirm against the official source for your specific route before booking.

Where the marks actually go

What usually goes wrong, what I look for in your work, and how we work with it.

What the visa route actually needs

Most work and study routes require all four skills. Some family and settlement routes require Speaking and Listening only.

What usually goes wrong

  • Assuming every route needs all four skills and over preparing
  • Assuming yours needs only two, and under preparing
  • Not checking the CEFR level your specific route requires
  • Working to a threshold that changed in January 2026

How I work with it: We confirm the exact requirement for your exact route first, before any preparation, and before you pay a test fee.

Where preparation still matters

The test content is identical to the standard version, so preparation is identical too.

What usually goes wrong

  • Believing the UKVI version is somehow harder, it is not
  • Preparing generically instead of to the specific band you need
  • Aiming for a good overall score when the route needs a per skill minimum

How I work with it: Once the route is confirmed, preparation happens on the IELTS or PTE pages, this page’s job is making sure you are preparing for the right thing in the first place.

Common score patterns

If your report looks like one of these, the cause is usually known and specific.

Booked the standard version by mistake

Good score, wrong test for the route

Working to a B1 threshold that became B2 in January 2026

Told by an agent that PTE works for nursing registration

Passed the test, application rejected on English grounds

If this is you

Has a score but isn’t sure it counts

Hasn’t booked yet and wants to avoid the mistake

Healthcare professional given conflicting advice

Long term UK resident who’s never sat a test

What we fix first

Most tutoring sites treat visa routes as a footnote. For a lot of people it’s the entire problem, their English is fine and their paperwork isn’t.

This page exists because I’ve seen people lose months and hundreds of pounds on a perfectly good score that couldn’t be used. A fifteen minute conversation prevents it.

If that’s your only issue, you don’t need lessons. Book a free Fit Call and I’ll tell you what you need, and that will be the end of it.

When this is not the right test for you

You may not need this page at all:

  • University admission with no visa needed, standard IELTS, PTE or TOEFL is usually fine.
  • Healthcare registration, that’s a regulator requirement, not a visa one. Go to OET or IELTS Academic.
  • Migration outside the UK, Australia, Canada and others have their own accepted lists and thresholds.

What you get in a Diagnostic Session

If route validity is your only issue, start with the free Fit Call, you may not need anything else. See full pricing.

No score report? You don’t need one. The Diagnostic works just as well from a goal and a deadline.

What students said.

Real students, real outcomes, across every service.

Choose the right approved English test route before you prepare.

We do not teach the question. We teach you to recognise what the question requires.

The topic and wording can change on exam day. Your preparation should therefore go beyond memorising model answers or rehearsing one familiar question type. We work from the current requirements of this exam, look at how you approach the task and help you build a method you can transfer when the question changes.

Your words stay yours. Where language is the blocker, we strengthen it. Where the real problem is task understanding, timing, technique or pressure, that is what we work on.

This is test route guidance and preparation. It is not immigration advice, and we do not promise visa eligibility. Always confirm your requirement against the current official GOV.UK guidance for your own route. Once you have confirmed the exact route you need, preparation follows the requirements of that specific test.

Questions about UKVI Test

Which visa routes need the UKVI version?

Most UK work, family and settlement routes require a Secure English Language Test. Student routes sometimes allow a university to vouch for another test instead. Confirm your specific route on gov.uk, it’s the only authoritative source.

A CEFR level, roughly equivalent to IELTS 5.5,6.5 depending on the skill. Skilled Worker, Scale up and HPI routes moved to B2 on 8 January 2026, and settlement follows in March 2027.

For most UK visa routes, no. A standard result has no reference number, and the application requires one. The test content is identical, it’s where you sit it that matters.

For Skilled Worker, Scale up, HPI and non sponsored study routes, generally yes. For NMC or GMC healthcare registration, no, PTE is not accepted in any form by either.

Skilled Worker, Scale up and HPI moved from B1 to B2 on 8 January 2026. Settlement moves from B1 to B2 on 26 March 2027. A lot of guidance online still quotes the old levels.

Depends on your deadline and how far along you are. Sometimes it is a rebooking; sometimes there is a faster route. If your deadline is close, the Rescue Session exists for this.

Your score report is the official record the test provider issues. For visa purposes what matters is not just the numbers but whether the report carries a Secure English Language Test reference. A standard report, however high the scores, does not have one and cannot be used for most UK visa routes.

Sixty minutes, live. We go through your score report or your writing line by line. If you have no report, we do a short skills check instead, across all four skills if it is your first time, or focused on the weakest one if you have sat before. Then I name the specific thing holding your score, show you the evidence in your own work, and give you a plan. Afterwards you get a written report and a one page plan by email.
