I am moving to the UK, so I need IELTS for UKVI Academic.
Before you pay for IELTS for UKVI, check what your UK route actually asks for.
Being Nigerian does not decide the test. Your receiving university, professional regulator, employer and immigration route decide what English evidence is accepted. I would verify that first, then talk about preparation.

Do not use “I am going to the UK” as the test selection rule. Check the receiving organisation, the exact immigration route, and the approved test or alternative evidence before you pay.
Do not accept advice until you can see what changes in the response.
This is a QuickTalk Tutor practice example, not official test material and not a promised score. The criterion claim is checked against the official sources listed later in this article.
The destination alone does not identify the correct product. The visa route, study level, institution or professional body decides what evidence is accepted.
My university accepts standard IELTS Academic, but I will also check whether my exact visa application requires a Secure English Language Test before booking.
The meaning remains the learner’s. The job of the correction is to make that meaning clearer and more effective. One sentence alone cannot guarantee an OET grade.
Find the official page for your receiving organisation and immigration route. Record the exact test name, delivery condition and required scores.
If you can see the mistake but cannot identify what keeps causing it in your own work, the Diagnostic checks your exact route, skill, current criteria and target.
This is where a confident wrong answer can waste more money than a bad essay.
I see people collapse university admission, professional registration and immigration English into one question. They are connected, but they are not always the same requirement. That is why “UK means IELTS for UKVI” is too broad.
My first job is not to sell you IELTS lessons. It is to make sure you are preparing for the right thing. If the official route says one test, I will not quietly teach you another because it is easier for the website.
If the route is wrong, good teaching still leads you to the wrong destination. So I check the destination first.
Write down the exact UK application route, then prove what English evidence that route asks for.
“I am moving to the UK” is not a test requirement. Student, Skilled Worker, family and other routes can have different English rules, and some applicants can prove English in ways that do not begin with booking IELTS. Use the official route page for your own application.
Do not leave any of these as “I think”.
Three UK examples show why one universal answer is dangerous.
Degree level Student route
Skilled Worker route
Family visa first application
If you cannot complete this sentence, do not pay for exam preparation yet.
Now save the official page and the date you checked it. Requirements can change. If that sentence is complete and your exam route is confirmed, then the teaching question becomes separate: what is stopping you from producing the required performance?
The next decision
- If the route is still unclear, verify it first. A tutor should not guess an immigration requirement for you.
- If the route is clear and one skill problem is already obvious, go directly to focused exam preparation.
- If the route is clear but the score keeps repeating and the cause is not supported by evidence, that is when a Diagnostic can be useful.
Three assumptions to test before you pay for the wrong route.
Tap each card. This is where QTT should feel different from a page that gives everybody the same tip.
Check these three things before you pay for the test.
Tick only what you can support from your own work. The aim is not to collect problems. It is to see whether a pattern is actually repeating.
Write the route on one page
Before booking, write three headings: Receiving organisation, Immigration route, Exact accepted evidence. Put the official answer under each one. If any box is still blank, you are not ready to choose the test yet.
Useful feedback should survive the next question.
Once the route is confirmed, QTT becomes a teaching service again. If Writing is stuck, Speaking drops under pressure or one task keeps failing, I look at the performance evidence. The Roadmap gives high level study direction. The Diagnostic investigates an unclear blocker. Lessons train a clear one.
Keep the original
I need the unchanged answer or recording so we have something real to compare.
Name one priority
I separate the strongest supported blocker from smaller issues instead of teaching everything at once.
Strengthen your words
The improved response should still sound like you. I explain why the change helps.
Change the task
A new prompt tests whether the improvement transfers when the answer is no longer familiar.
Choose the next step only after the route is confirmed.
The next step depends on what is already known. If the blocker is clear, teach it. If the cause is unclear, investigate it. If the route is unclear, verify the route first.
You are still unsure what your route accepts
Do not book a Diagnostic for immigration advice. Check GOV.UK and the receiving organisation first.
See UKVI guidance →The route is confirmed but the score problem is unclear
Now the Diagnostic can investigate the English performance.
See the Diagnostic →The route and blocker are both clear
Go straight to the relevant IELTS preparation.

QuickTalk Tutor provides teaching and coaching. It does not issue official exam scores, admissions decisions, immigration decisions or professional registration decisions. Where a receiving organisation sets a requirement, check that organisation directly.
