I am writing an essay to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of changing my laboratory time.
TOEFL Write an Email needs a clear job, not an essay squeezed into an inbox.
A learner who has practised academic essays may bring an introduction, general discussion and conclusion into a task that needs a direct email. The writing can be grammatical and still feel slow or unclear.

Plan four lines before drafting: recipient relationship, purpose, necessary context and requested next step. Write the email so the reader can act without guessing what you want.
Do not accept advice until you can see what changes in the response.
This is a QuickTalk Tutor practice example, not official test material and not a promised score. The criterion claim is checked against the official sources listed later in this article.
An email is being treated like an essay. The recipient needs the request and enough context to act.
Hello Professor Lee, could I move Tuesday’s laboratory session to Thursday? I have a required medical appointment at the scheduled time and can join either Thursday group.
The meaning remains the learner’s. The job of the correction is to make that meaning clearer and more effective. One sentence alone cannot guarantee an OET grade.
Put recipient, request and necessary reason in the opening. Remove essay signposting. Then check whether the recipient knows what action to take.
If you can see the mistake but cannot identify what keeps causing it in your own work, the Diagnostic checks your exact route, skill, current criteria and target.
The updated task rewards practical communication decisions.
ETS lists Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion in the current TOEFL iBT Writing section. The official guidance says tasks are concise and focused and scoring considers how clearly and effectively ideas are communicated.
An email to a classmate, lecturer or administrator may need different directness and context. A memorised essay opening can delay the purpose and waste limited time.
I would separate task completion, organisation, tone and language control before deciding what the learner needs.
I do not need a generic mistake list. I need the behaviour that repeats when the material, timing or follow-up changes.
Check the decision that is actually being made.
A useful diagnosis separates the parts of the performance before it recommends more practice.

Write the same problem to two recipients.
- Choose a missed class or scheduling problem.
- Write one email to a classmate and one to a lecturer.
- Underline the purpose, context and action in both.
- Use a new problem and reproduce the decisions without copying the sentences.
Transfer check
The skill is visible when tone and detail change appropriately for a new recipient, not when one email is memorised.
Your words. Clearer and stronger, but still yours.
I keep the original evidence, choose one priority, strengthen the response without replacing your voice, then change the task. That final change tells us whether the work transferred.
Keep the original
We need the unchanged response, recording or timing log.
Name one priority
We separate the strongest supported blocker from smaller issues.
Strengthen your words
The improved response should still sound like you, with the reason for each change clear.
Change the task
A fresh task shows whether the improvement is available without the old answer.
Do not pay for help you do not need.
If the blocker is clear, teach it. If the cause is still unclear, investigate it before building the plan.
The blocker is already clear
