The university asks for TOEFL 90, so I need to convert that to the new 1–6 scale myself.
Your US university lists an old TOEFL score. Do not convert it from memory.
A university page may still show 90, 100 or another 0–120 requirement while your new score report uses the 1–6 scale. That mismatch does not require a homemade conversion table.

Read the university’s current admissions page and ETS’s current score guidance. Use the comparable result already shown on the official score report, then confirm unclear or programme-specific conditions directly with admissions.
Do not accept advice until you can see what changes in the response.
This is a QuickTalk Tutor practice example, not official test material and not a promised score. The criterion claim is checked against the official sources listed later in this article.
During the transition, a webpage may show an older requirement. A remembered conversion is not an admissions decision.
I will ask the university which score scale applies to my test date and obtain the requirement in writing before deciding my target.
The meaning remains the learner’s. The job of the correction is to make that meaning clearer and more effective. One sentence alone cannot guarantee an OET grade.
Send admissions one precise question with programme, intake and test date. Save the reply beside the official ETS score guidance.
If you can see the mistake but cannot identify what keeps causing it in your own work, the Diagnostic checks your exact route, skill, current criteria and target.
A target score belongs to the receiving institution, not to a generic “good score” chart.
ETS says TOEFL iBT score reports changed on 21 January 2026 to section and overall results on a 1–6 scale in half-point increments. During a two-year transition, reports also include a comparable 0–120 total.
Institutions are updating at different times and may set different overall, section, MyBest or programme rules. The same score can be sufficient for one course and insufficient for another.
Once the verified target is clear, diagnosis compares your current four-skill performance with that target. It should not promise admission or invent a conversion.
Use the current authority for the rule, then use your own unchanged work to decide what needs teaching.
Check the decision that is actually being made.
A useful diagnosis separates the parts of the performance before recommending more practice.

Confirmation
Build a one-page target record.
- Save the programme requirement page and date.
- Save ETS’s current score explanation.
- Record overall and section conditions separately.
- Prepare against the verified gap, not a general internet target.
Transfer check
The target is usable when it names the programme, scale, sections and source date.
Your words. Clearer and stronger, but still yours.
The work begins with the unchanged evidence, one clear priority and a practical correction. A fresh task then shows whether the change is available without copying the old answer.
Keep the original
Use the first response, recording or timing evidence.
Name one priority
Separate the strongest supported blocker from smaller issues.
Strengthen your words
Make the response clearer without replacing the learner’s thinking.
Change the task
Use fresh material to check whether the improvement transfers.
Do not pay for help you do not need.
Verify external requirements with the responsible organisation. Use teaching for the English performance that the evidence actually supports.
The result is clear but the cause is not
Use the Diagnostic to compare the actual performance with the current criteria and target.
