Online English TutorTOEFL iBT 2026 · Complete the Words

TOEFL Complete the Words is not solved by staring harder at the missing letters.

The updated TOEFL iBT Reading section includes Complete the Words. If you treat each partial word as an isolated spelling puzzle, you throw away the sentence and paragraph evidence the task is designed to use.

The useful answer first

Before completing a word, predict its grammatical job and broad meaning from the sentence. Then use the visible letters to confirm or reject candidates. Read the completed sentence again inside the paragraph.

Fix one real problem with me

Do not accept advice until you can see what changes in the response.

This is a QuickTalk Tutor practice example, not official test material and not a promised score. The criterion claim is checked against the official sources listed later in this article.

WHAT I WROTE OR TRIED
The sentence says the campus will exp___ its opening hours. I chose explain.
WHY IT LOST MARKS OR CLARITY

The letters can begin more than one word, but the sentence meaning and grammar require a verb about making the hours longer.

A STRONGER VERSION
The campus will expand its opening hours during examination week.

The meaning remains the learner’s. The job of the correction is to make that meaning clearer and more effective. One sentence alone cannot guarantee an OET grade.

NOW YOU TRY

Before completing letters, predict the meaning and word class. Then test whether the completed word makes the whole sentence natural.

This is what the Diagnostic is for.

If you can see the mistake but cannot identify what keeps causing it in your own work, the Diagnostic checks your exact route, skill, current criteria and target.

Fast word recognition and contextual reading are working together.

ETS describes Complete the Words as completing partially missing words in a short text. It measures vocabulary knowledge and the ability to understand meaning from context.

The post-21 January 2026 TOEFL iBT content also includes Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage. Preparation built only around the older task list leaves a real format gap.

I would test whether errors come from vocabulary availability, word form, sentence grammar or losing the paragraph meaning while repairing letters.

I do not need a generic mistake list. I need the behaviour that repeats when the material, timing or follow-up changes.

What I am looking forKeep the original response. Name the strongest supported blocker. Change the task and see whether the improvement survives.
Turn the problem into evidence

Check the decision that is actually being made.

A useful diagnosis separates the parts of the performance before it recommends more practice.

Word job
Is the gap likely to be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb or function word?
Meaning
What idea must the word contribute to the sentence?
Letter evidence
Which candidate fits every visible letter and likely ending?
Paragraph check
Does the completed sentence still fit the argument or description around it?
Do this now

Predict before completing.

  1. Take a short academic paragraph and cover the second half of selected words.
  2. Predict the grammar and meaning before looking at the visible letters.
  3. Complete the words and reread the full paragraph.
  4. Repeat with a daily-life text to test a different vocabulary range.

Transfer check

A strategy that works only on one prepared word list is too narrow. It must survive a different subject and text type.

The QuickTalk Tutor method

Your words. Clearer and stronger, but still yours.

I keep the original evidence, choose one priority, strengthen the response without replacing your voice, then change the task. That final change tells us whether the work transferred.

01

Keep the original

We need the unchanged response, recording or timing log.

02

Name one priority

We separate the strongest supported blocker from smaller issues.

03

Strengthen your words

The improved response should still sound like you, with the reason for each change clear.

04

Change the task

A fresh task shows whether the improvement is available without the old answer.
