Online English TutorPTE Academic · Respond to a Situation

PTE Respond to a Situation needs a response, not a speech template.

A memorised four-sentence frame may help you begin. It can also make every request, apology, explanation and complaint sound identical. The situation should control the language.

The useful answer first

Before speaking, answer three questions: Who am I talking to? What must change after I speak? What detail makes the request reasonable? Then deliver the response directly in the 40-second window.

Fix one real problem with me

Do not accept advice until you can see what changes in the response.

This is a QuickTalk Tutor practice example, not official test material and not a promised score. The criterion claim is checked against the official sources listed later in this article.

WHAT I WROTE OR TRIED
Good morning. Today I would like to talk about an important situation concerning the library.
WHY IT LOST MARKS OR CLARITY

The response sounds like a presentation. It delays the speech act the situation requires.

A STRONGER VERSION
Hi, I booked the study room for 3 pm, but another group is using it. Could you check the reservation and help us find another room if necessary?

The meaning remains the learner’s. The job of the correction is to make that meaning clearer and more effective. One sentence alone cannot guarantee an OET grade.

NOW YOU TRY

Identify who you are speaking to, what happened and what you need them to do. Say that naturally in the first two sentences.

This is what the Diagnostic is for.

If you can see the mistake but cannot identify what keeps causing it in your own work, the Diagnostic checks your exact route, skill, current criteria and target.

Appropriacy is part of the task, not decoration around grammar.

Pearson describes Respond to a Situation as an extended spoken response to a description you both read and hear. The prompt can be up to 60 words and the response time is 40 seconds.

The same language should not serve a classmate, lecturer, supervisor and service desk. The relationship changes directness, explanation and the kind of next step you request.

If the response sounds fluent but does not complete the communication job, more fluency practice alone will not solve it.

I do not need a generic mistake list. I need the behaviour that repeats when the material, timing or follow-up changes.

What I am looking forKeep the original response. Name the strongest supported blocker. Change the task and see whether the improvement survives.
Turn the problem into evidence

Check the decision that is actually being made.

A useful diagnosis separates the parts of the performance before it recommends more practice.

Relationship
Who has authority, responsibility or shared knowledge in this interaction?
Purpose
Are you requesting, refusing, apologising, explaining or negotiating?
Necessary detail
What fact must the listener know to act?
Next step
Does the final sentence make the required action clear?
Do this now

Change the listener, keep the problem.

  1. Respond to a late assignment as if speaking to a classmate.
  2. Respond again as if speaking to the lecturer.
  3. Underline what changed in tone, detail and request.
  4. Use a new situation and make the same relationship decisions without a script.

Transfer check

The response is stronger when it still sounds appropriate after the role changes. That is more useful than reproducing one perfect template.

The QuickTalk Tutor method

Your words. Clearer and stronger, but still yours.

I keep the original evidence, choose one priority, strengthen the response without replacing your voice, then change the task. That final change tells us whether the work transferred.

01

Keep the original

We need the unchanged response, recording or timing log.

02

Name one priority

We separate the strongest supported blocker from smaller issues.

03

Strengthen your words

The improved response should still sound like you, with the reason for each change clear.

04

Change the task

A fresh task shows whether the improvement is available without the old answer.

Choose the next step from evidence

Do not pay for help you do not need.

If the blocker is clear, teach it. If the cause is still unclear, investigate it before building the plan.

The blocker is already clear
