Online English TutorIELTS Writing Task 2 · Relevance

Your memorised IELTS essay may be fluent and still answer the wrong question.

A prepared introduction can feel safe under pressure. The risk appears when the prompt asks for two views, causes and solutions, advantages and disadvantages, or the extent of your agreement and the memorised structure quietly changes the job.

The useful answer first

Before writing, circle the instruction words, state your position in one sentence and give each body paragraph one idea that directly helps answer that instruction. Remove any prepared sentence that cannot be connected to the exact question.

Fix one real problem with me

Do not accept advice until you can see what changes in the response.

This is a QuickTalk Tutor practice example, not official test material and not a promised score. The criterion claim is checked against the official sources listed later in this article.

WHAT I WROTE OR TRIED
There are advantages and disadvantages to every development, and this essay will discuss both sides before reaching a balanced conclusion.
WHY IT LOST MARKS OR CLARITY

The sentence promises a both-views essay even when the task may ask for an opinion, causes, problems or solutions. The memorised structure can make Task Response less relevant.

A STRONGER VERSION
Public transport should be subsidised because lower fares can reduce the number of commuters who drive into city centres.

The meaning remains the learner’s. The job of the correction is to make that meaning clearer and more effective. One sentence alone cannot guarantee an OET grade.

NOW YOU TRY

Circle the instruction words. Write one sentence that answers only that instruction. If your old introduction could fit a different task type, replace it.

This is what the Diagnostic is for.

If you can see the mistake but cannot identify what keeps causing it in your own work, the Diagnostic checks your exact route, skill, current criteria and target.

A language-strength problem and a task-answer problem are not the same.

IELTS Writing is assessed against published criteria including Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. A response can show strong vocabulary while weakening Task Response through partial coverage or irrelevant development.

The useful evidence is the essay beside the prompt. I want to see where each paragraph answers the instruction, what claim it develops and whether examples prove that claim.

Practising another memorised introduction will not fix a repeated decision to answer the topic generally instead of the question precisely.

Use the current authority for the rule, then use your own unchanged work to decide what needs teaching.

Evidence before adviceVerify the exact route. Keep the original response. Name one supported priority. Test it again with a changed task.
Turn the problem into evidence

Check the decision that is actually being made.

A useful diagnosis separates the parts of the performance before recommending more practice.

Evidence
Does the example prove the claim or merely mention the topic?
Do this now

Audit relevance before language.

  1. Underline every instruction in the prompt.
  2. Write the position and two main claims only.
  3. Draft one paragraph and label how every sentence supports its claim.
  4. Repeat with a differently worded prompt without reusing the old introduction.

Transfer check

The planning method works when it produces a relevant structure for a new question type.

The QuickTalk Tutor method

Your words. Clearer and stronger, but still yours.

The work begins with the unchanged evidence, one clear priority and a practical correction. A fresh task then shows whether the change is available without copying the old answer.

01

Keep the original

Use the first response, recording or timing evidence.

02

Name one priority

Separate the strongest supported blocker from smaller issues.

03

Strengthen your words

Make the response clearer without replacing the learner’s thinking.

04

Change the task

Use fresh material to check whether the improvement transfers.
