Online English TutorTOEFL iBT 2026 · Listen and Choose a Response

TOEFL Listen and Choose a Response: matching words can still miss the speaker’s intent.

A distractor can repeat the same noun and still be socially or logically wrong. The correct response may paraphrase the prompt while completing the interaction naturally.

The useful answer first

After hearing the prompt, identify the speech act: question, suggestion, request, concern, correction or invitation. Predict the job of the response before comparing options.

Fix one real problem with me

Do not accept advice until you can see what changes in the response.

This is a QuickTalk Tutor practice example, not official test material and not a promised score. The criterion claim is checked against the official sources listed later in this article.

WHAT I WROTE OR TRIED
Speaker: Didn’t Maya send the revised schedule? Response chosen: Yes, the schedule is revised.
WHY IT LOST MARKS OR CLARITY

The words match, but the response does not answer the implied question about whether Maya sent it.

A STRONGER VERSION
I haven’t received it yet. I’ll ask Maya to resend it.

The meaning remains the learner’s. The job of the correction is to make that meaning clearer and more effective. One sentence alone cannot guarantee an OET grade.

NOW YOU TRY

After listening, paraphrase the speaker’s intention before looking at options. Choose the response that continues the interaction, not the one sharing the most words.

This is what the Diagnostic is for.

If you can see the mistake but cannot identify what keeps causing it in your own work, the Diagnostic checks your exact route, skill, current criteria and target.

This is an interaction decision inside a listening task.

ETS’s current TOEFL Listening page includes Listen and Choose a Response, alongside conversations, announcements and academic talks. It describes the task as measuring meaning, intent and common spoken patterns.

If the learner hears vocabulary but misreads intention, more word lists will not target the problem. If intention is clear but reduced speech is missed, acoustic processing needs attention.

The diagnosis uses the first answer and the audio evidence. Replaying until every option feels familiar can hide the original behaviour.

Use the current authority for the rule, then use your own unchanged work to decide what needs teaching.

Evidence before adviceVerify the exact route. Keep the original response. Name one supported priority. Test it again with a changed task.
Turn the problem into evidence

Check the decision that is actually being made.

A useful diagnosis separates the parts of the performance before recommending more practice.

Do this now

Predict before selecting.

  1. Listen once without looking at options.
  2. State the likely response job in a few words.
  3. Choose and explain why the alternatives fail.
  4. Use a new prompt to test the same intent decision.

Transfer check

Improvement survives when the vocabulary changes but the learner still recognises the interaction.

The QuickTalk Tutor method

Your words. Clearer and stronger, but still yours.

The work begins with the unchanged evidence, one clear priority and a practical correction. A fresh task then shows whether the change is available without copying the old answer.

01

Keep the original

Use the first response, recording or timing evidence.

02

Name one priority

Separate the strongest supported blocker from smaller issues.

03

Strengthen your words

Make the response clearer without replacing the learner’s thinking.

04

Change the task

Use fresh material to check whether the improvement transfers.
