PTE Read Aloud: faster is not better when phrasing and intelligibility disappear.
A learner may increase words per minute and lower the number of pauses, yet become harder to understand. Smooth delivery is not the same as rushing through punctuation and meaning groups.

Mark the passage into sense groups, identify stressed content words and record once at a natural rate. Review skipped words, false starts, stress and whether a regular listener can follow the sentence immediately.
Do not accept advice until you can see what changes in the response.
This is a QuickTalk Tutor practice example, not official test material and not a promised score. The criterion claim is checked against the official sources listed later in this article.
The words are present, but rushing removes phrase boundaries and intelligibility. Speed that obscures meaning is not fluent communication.
Climate change is affecting cities / and governments are developing new policies.
The meaning remains the learner’s. The job of the correction is to make that meaning clearer and more effective. One sentence alone cannot guarantee an OET grade.
Mark thought groups with slashes. Record once at a controlled pace, then once slightly faster. Keep the faster version only if every key word remains clear.
If you can see the mistake but cannot identify what keeps causing it in your own work, the Diagnostic checks your exact route, skill, current criteria and target.
The useful unit is the phrase, not the stopwatch alone.
Pearson describes Read Aloud within PTE Academic Speaking and Writing. Its published guidance connects the task with reading, speaking, pronunciation and oral fluency.
The diagnostic separates decoding errors, sound production, phrasing and performance pressure. A learner who misreads unfamiliar words needs different work from one who knows every word but flattens stress and rhythm.
Regional and national pronunciation varieties are recognised when speech remains understandable. The goal is clear, natural communication under the task conditions.
Use the current authority for the rule, then use your own unchanged work to decide what needs teaching.
Check the decision that is actually being made.
A useful diagnosis separates the parts of the performance before recommending more practice.

Use marked and unmarked versions.
- Mark sense groups and stressed words.
- Record the marked passage once.
- Record a fresh unmarked passage using the same decisions.
- Compare clarity and errors before changing speed.
Transfer check
The skill transfers when phrasing remains clear on a new passage without visible marks.
Your words. Clearer and stronger, but still yours.
The work begins with the unchanged evidence, one clear priority and a practical correction. A fresh task then shows whether the change is available without copying the old answer.
Keep the original
Use the first response, recording or timing evidence.
Name one priority
Separate the strongest supported blocker from smaller issues.
Strengthen your words
Make the response clearer without replacing the learner’s thinking.
Change the task
Use fresh material to check whether the improvement transfers.
Do not pay for help you do not need.
Verify external requirements with the responsible organisation. Use teaching for the English performance that the evidence actually supports.
The result is clear but the cause is not
Use the Diagnostic to compare the actual performance with the current criteria and target.
