Online English TutorOET Speaking · Role-play

Your OET role-play is not a checklist to read at the patient.

You need to address the role-card tasks. But if every question and explanation arrives in a fixed order regardless of the patient response, the encounter can sound completed rather than communicated.

The useful answer first

After each patient turn, name the function you need next: acknowledge, explore, explain, check, reassure carefully or agree an action. Use the card as a destination list, not a script that prevents listening.

Fix one real problem with me

Do not accept advice until you can see what changes in the response.

This is a QuickTalk Tutor practice example, not official test material and not a promised score. The criterion claim is checked against the official sources listed later in this article.

WHAT I WROTE OR TRIED
First, I will explain the medication. Second, you must change your diet. Third, you need another appointment.
WHY IT LOST MARKS OR CLARITY

The checklist controls the conversation. The patient’s concern is neither acknowledged nor explored, so the advice may not respond to what is stopping them.

A STRONGER VERSION
It sounds as though starting insulin is what worries you most. What have you heard about it?

The meaning remains the learner’s. The job of the correction is to make that meaning clearer and more effective. One sentence alone cannot guarantee an OET grade.

NOW YOU TRY

Acknowledge the concern, ask one open question, respond to the answer, then explain. Practise with a new concern so you do not memorise one script.

This is what the Diagnostic is for.

If you can see the mistake but cannot identify what keeps causing it in your own work, the Diagnostic checks your exact route, skill, current criteria and target.

OET Speaking combines linguistic and clinical communication criteria.

OET Speaking uses two profession-specific role plays with an interlocutor. You play your professional role and the interlocutor plays the patient, client or relative. OET provides separate linguistic and clinical communication criteria.

A learner may use accurate medical language but fail to check understanding. Another may sound warm but leave the purpose of the consultation unresolved. The profession and role-card situation also matter.

That is why I would not recycle one Nursing script into Medicine, Pharmacy or Veterinary Science.

I do not need a generic mistake list. I need the behaviour that repeats when the material, timing or follow-up changes.

What I am looking forKeep the original response. Name the strongest supported blocker. Change the task and see whether the improvement survives.
Turn the problem into evidence

Check the decision that is actually being made.

A useful diagnosis separates the parts of the performance before it recommends more practice.

Listening response
Does your next move reflect the concern the patient actually expressed?
Information gathering
Are questions purposeful, logically sequenced and not unnecessarily repeated?
Explanation
Is information organised in patient-friendly chunks with understanding checked?
Relationship
Can you acknowledge emotion without promising an outcome you cannot guarantee?
Do this now

Pause the role-play after every patient turn.

  1. Use an official sample role card for your profession.
  2. After each patient response, pause and name the next communication function.
  3. Complete the role-play once without pausing.
  4. Change the patient concern and see whether your sequence adapts.

Transfer check

If the language remains patient-centred when the concern changes, you are communicating rather than reciting.

The QuickTalk Tutor method

Your words. Clearer and stronger, but still yours.

I keep the original evidence, choose one priority, strengthen the response without replacing your voice, then change the task. That final change tells us whether the work transferred.

01

Keep the original

We need the unchanged response, recording or timing log.

02

Name one priority

We separate the strongest supported blocker from smaller issues.

03

Strengthen your words

The improved response should still sound like you, with the reason for each change clear.

04

Change the task

A fresh task shows whether the improvement is available without the old answer.

Choose the next step from evidence

Do not pay for help you do not need.

If the blocker is clear, teach it. If the cause is still unclear, investigate it before building the plan.

The blocker is already clear
