TOEFL coaching that's current with the 2026 format.

The test changed fundamentally in January 2026. A great deal of preparation material online still teaches the version that no longer exists.

Who this is for

  • University applicants, particularly to the US
  • Anyone who prepared before January 2026 and isn’t sure what’s changed
  • Candidates whose score dropped on the new format
  • People told by their institution that TOEFL is required
  • Anyone unsure whether TOEFL works for their route at all

What this test is really measuring

TOEFL iBT tests Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing for academic contexts. Since January 2026 it does so adaptively: your performance on early questions changes the difficulty of later ones.

If you are losing marks to TOEFL integrated writing sentence errors, or losing your thread inside TOEFL ibt independent writing time limits, the issue is usually synthesis pacing rather than English. Unverified online practice test material causing score drops makes it worse, because it trains you for a format that changed.

That single change alters how you should approach the test, and it’s the thing most preparation content hasn’t caught up with.

Recent changes that affect your preparation

TOEFL was reformed on 21 January 2026. The main changes:

  • Adaptive Reading and Listening, difficulty adjusts to your performance as you go
  • New 1.0,6.0 band scale, shown alongside the traditional 0,120 during the transition
  • Roughly 90 minutes, down from about two hours

The insight almost nobody publishes: in an adaptive test, questions getting harder partway through usually means you’re performing well. Many candidates read rising difficulty as failure, panic mid test, and lose marks they had already earned. Knowing this in advance is worth real points.

Which version do you need?

Before you book: check your institution

Acceptance of the reformed test was uneven during the transition, some universities paused or added conditions for scores from the new format. Confirm directly with your specific institution and programme before paying a test fee.

Note on UK visas: TOEFL is not a Home Office Secure English Language Test, so it can’t be used on its own for UK work, family or settlement visas. For a Student route visa a university may vouch for it directly. See UKVI Test.

Where the marks actually go

What usually goes wrong, what I look for in your work, and how we work with it.

Reading

Now adaptive. Difficulty shifts based on your earlier answers.

What usually goes wrong

  • Panicking when questions get harder, which usually signals good performance
  • Pacing built for the old, longer format
  • Over reading passages instead of locating answers
  • Losing time on one difficult question and rushing the rest

How I work with it: We rebuild pacing for the current length and format, and we cover what rising difficulty actually means so it doesn’t derail you mid test.

Listening

Also adaptive, with academic lectures and campus conversations.

What usually goes wrong

  • Note taking systems designed for the older, longer recordings
  • Missing the speaker’s attitude or purpose, which is heavily tested
  • Losing the thread after one unfamiliar term
  • Trying to write everything instead of capturing structure

How I work with it: Note taking that captures structure and stance rather than transcribing, which matters more in the shorter format.

Speaking

Independent and integrated tasks, with tight preparation and response times.

What usually goes wrong

  • Freezing when the preparation timer starts
  • Memorised templates that don’t fit the actual prompt
  • Running out of content before the response time ends
  • Rushing and losing clarity under time pressure

How I work with it: Response frameworks that flex to the prompt, plus practice at handling the timer itself, which for many people is the actual barrier, not the English.

Writing

Integrated and academic discussion tasks, both tightly timed.

What usually goes wrong

  • Summarising the reading and ignoring the listening, or vice versa
  • Weak paraphrasing that reads as copying
  • Discussion responses that don’t genuinely engage other viewpoints
  • Running out of time before a conclusion

How I work with it: Task specific structures for each writing type, so you’re not improvising format under time pressure.

Common score patterns

If your report looks like one of these, the cause is usually known and specific.

Score dropped after switching to the new 2026 format

Speaking noticeably lower than the other three

Went blank when the timer started, despite months of study

Strong on practice materials, weaker in the real test

If this is you

Prepared from pre-2026 materials

Knows the content but freezes under timing

Adaptive format felt confusing or discouraging

Unsure whether TOEFL even works for their route

What we fix first

Most TOEFL content online still describes the pre-2026 test: the old length, the old scale, the old pacing. Preparing from it means preparing for a test that no longer exists.

I work from the current format, adaptive delivery, the 1,6 scale, the shorter timing, and treat test psychology as a real component, because in an adaptive test, misreading the difficulty signal genuinely costs marks.

When this is not the right test for you

TOEFL is narrower in use than it used to be. It may not be your test if:

  • You need it for a UK visa, it isn’t a SELT and won’t qualify on its own. See UKVI Test.
  • You work in healthcare, regulators generally require OET or IELTS Academic.
  • Your university accepts alternatives, IELTS or PTE may suit your strengths better. Worth checking before committing.

What you get in a Diagnostic Session

No score report? You don’t need one. The Diagnostic works just as well from a goal and a deadline.

What students said.

Real students, real outcomes, across every service.

TOEFL preparation built around the current test, not an old format.

We do not teach the question. We teach you to recognise what the question requires.

The topic and wording can change on exam day. Your preparation should therefore go beyond memorising model answers or rehearsing one familiar question type. We work from the current requirements of this exam, look at how you approach the task and help you build a method you can transfer when the question changes.

Your words stay yours. Where language is the blocker, we strengthen it. Where the real problem is task understanding, timing, technique or pressure, that is what we work on.

A great deal of TOEFL advice still in circulation describes a format that no longer exists. We work from the current published requirements, and we build response control you can transfer to an unfamiliar prompt rather than a script you have memorised for a question you may never see.

Questions about TOEFL iBT

Is TOEFL still accepted where I need it?

For most universities, yes, but acceptance of the reformed format was uneven during the transition. Confirm with your specific institution and programme before booking.

Reading and Listening became adaptive, the test moved to a 1.0,6.0 band scale alongside the old 0,120, and total time dropped to roughly 90 minutes.

Core English skills transfer. But pacing, task familiarity and the scale itself are different. If your materials predate January 2026, they’re teaching a test that no longer runs in that form.

Worth establishing whether the cause was English, format unfamiliarity, or timing pressure, they need completely different responses. That is what the Diagnostic Session is for.

The opposite, usually. Rising difficulty typically indicates strong performance. Candidates who read it as failure and panic often lose marks they’d already earned.

Not on its own, it is not a Secure English Language Test. For a Student route visa, a university may assess and vouch for it directly. See the UKVI page.

Since January 2026 it shows a band on the 1.0 to 6.0 scale alongside the traditional 0 to 120 scale, with a score for each of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Reading and Listening are now adaptive, so your score reflects both accuracy and the difficulty level you reached, which is why comparing it directly to an older report can mislead you.

Sixty minutes, live. We go through your score report or your writing line by line. If you have no report, we do a short skills check instead, across all four skills if it is your first time, or focused on the weakest one if you have sat before. Then I name the specific thing holding your score, show you the evidence in your own work, and give you a plan. Afterwards you get a written report and a one page plan by email.
